Becoming a barber can be an excellent way to start a fun and exciting career. As a barber, there are a plethora of opportunities out there. For instance, you could work at a barber shop or a hair salon cutting clients’ hair, you could work freelance and cut people’s hair at their homes, or you can start your own salon or barbershop. Who knows, perhaps one day your little barbershop will turn into a chain of barbershops and you will become successful beyond your wildest dreams. As a barber, the opportunities are really endless. Here is some of the education and training required to become a barber.

First of all, it is important to know that you have both a passion and a knack for cutting hair. When it comes down to it, if you are awkward with scissors or if you feel uncomfortable cutting people’s hair, chances are that you will not thrive in a barber training program and you will not thrive as a barber. So, you might want to gather a few brave friends together to see if your passion is actually a passion, or just an ill-fated curiosity that will fizzle out when you realize that you don’t really know what you are doing.

However, even if you don’t really know what you are doing and you still have a passion, there might be a chance. This is why going to a barber school is so important. Not only will taking a specialized training program allow you to get your barber’s license, but it will also lay the foundation you need to cut people’s hair and do a great job. In a training program, you will learn not only what different tools are - besides scissors and buzzers - but you will also learn how these tools can enhance your trade. As a barber, these tools will be critical to your livelihood, and you will need to know how each and every one of the tools you have can give a client the hair cut they are describing or requesting.

After you have taken a barber training program – which usually takes about three months – you want to start building your portfolio. This is where your brave friends come back in place and hopefully their hair has grown back since the last time you tried to give them new hairdos. Once you have your friends over, you want to give them a few unique hairstyles that are popular – hairstyles that clients would ask for if you were to work in a barbershop or hair salon. After you’ve cut a few people’s hair, you want to take some professional photographs for your portfolio.

Lastly, once you have a strong portfolio, you can start taking it around to a few barbershops. Many barbershops have seats and stations that you can rent, but they won’t give these stations to just anyone. If you want to work for the best, you want to have a great portfolio. The rest will be easy and fun.
